Tissera reports that the company scientific team has reached significant milestones in its research on pig fetal liver transplantation
Friday, August 12, 2005

Tissera, Inc. (OTCBB: TSSR – News) reports that Tissera's sponsored research team at the Weizmann Institute of Science has reached significant milestones in its research on xenotransplantation of pig fetal liver.

Whereas previous studies, performed by other groups, showed that proliferation of transplanted isolated hepatocytes (liver cells) can be achieved only in conjunction with destructive manipulations of host liver, the study completed by Tissera's research team showed extensive proliferation of hepatic cells after pig fetal liver fragments transplantation, without any preparative manipulations of the host liver.

Transplantation of fetal liver fragments led to mature liver function (albumin production) as early as three days after transplantation and exhibited a much increased proliferative capacity. An important additional feature of  the utilization of  fetal liver fragments, harvested within an optimal gestational time window previously defined by the company's research team,  was shown to be a much reduced immunogenicity (meaning much less need of immunosuppressive agents to prevent rejection of the transplanted tissue).

Those studies demonstrated the striking advantages of the company's unique approach to fetal pig liver tissue xenotransplantation, which holds the potential to be translated   into an efficient therapeutic approach in humans, either for bridging patients with acute liver failure while awaiting organ transplantation, or for the treatment of liver-related enzymatic deficiencies, at minimal immune suppression requirements.

The company also reports that its experiments on xenotransplantation of fetal pig pancreatic tissue in primates are in progress. Those experiments are aiming at paving the way for the conduction of human clinical studies for the treatment of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

About Tissera

Tissera is a biotechnology company dedicated to the development of novel tissue precursor regeneration technologies for treating gene deficiencies and diseases in which organ transplantation is necessary, while minimizing the dosage of immunosuppressive drugs. Tissera obtained the license for the worldwide exclusive rights to the technology developed by Professor Yair Reisner and his team at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. In this research, scientists successfully implanted in mice embryonic human and porcine organ precursor tissues, which grew into functional organs. This research was published in Nature Medicine and attracted worldwide scientific and media attention.
